As imaxes aquí presentadas pertencen a un proxecto máis amplo, non centrado exclusivamente no retrato, que aínda está en proceso de edición e cuxo destino final vai transcorrer entre as páxinas dun libro. Dende alí intentará suxerirlle ao espectador diversos aspectos da realidade dos traballadores estacionais que fan posible a actividade do sector turístico nas áreas rurais do sur de Islandia. A aproximación neste proxecto poderíamos definila, entre as moitas posibles, como “de dentro a fora”, en clara contraposición a outra na que o fotógrafo se posiciona dende o exterior do tema que aborda para pasar a rexistralo a modo de observador non-participe, con todas as virtudes e carencias asociadas a tal proposta. Eu traballei por seis tediosos veráns nesa misma zona, con esas mismas persoas, nese mismo sector. Ás veces baixo un mismo teito, ás veces compartindo pingas de choiva, xuntos falamos o mesmo dialecto, unha mestura das linguas maternas de todos os que participamos de este fragmento da realidade, e nel compartimos vivencias pasadas e presentes, e soños sobre o futuro. Dende este contexto, o que pretendo e presentar un universo visual que, coma esta esta linguaxe híbrida da que falo, é compartido polas persoas retratadas nestas fotografías, sendo eu o filtro a través do cal se configura o relato creado por estas imáxes, un relato que se revela en última instancia autorreferencial e autobiográfico.

The images shown here belong to a more extensive project, not focused exclusively on portraits, which is still in edition process and whose final destination will elapse between the pages of a book. From there, it will try to suggest the viewer various aspects of the reality of the seasonal workers that enable the activity of tourism in rural areas of southern Iceland. The approach to this project could be defined, among the many possible ones, as “inside-out”, in clear contrast to another where the photographer´s position comes from the outside of the topic he addresses, registering it as a non-participating observer, with all the strengths and weaknesses associated with the proposal. I worked for six tedious summers in the same area, with the same people, in the same sector. Sometimes under the same roof, sometimes sharing raindrops, we spoke the same dialect, a mixture of the mother languages of those who partake of this fragment of reality, and in which we have shared past and present experiences and dreams about the future. In this context, what I intend to present is a visual universe that, like this hybrid language I am talking about, is shared by the people portrayed in these photographs, being my inner self the filter that configures the story created by these images, a story that is ultimately revealed as self-referential and autobiographical.

David Barreiro (A estrada, 1982) é un fotógrafo galego que vive a cabalo entre Galicia e Islandia. Estudou fotografía na escola EFTI de Madrid, Master en 2012. O seu traballo foi publicado en medios especializados coma Positive-Magazine, Top Photography Film, F-stop Magazine, Neo2, Aintbad Magazine ou F-Stop Magazine, e foi seleccionado no Fotografía Festival Internazionale di Roma 2013 e Encontros da Imagem 2014.

David Barreiro (A estrada, 1982) is a galician photographer living between Spain and Iceland. He studied photography in the EFTI school (Madrid) getting his Master degree in 2012. His work has been featured in specialized media like Positive-Magazine, Top Photography Film, F-stop Magazine, Neo2, Aintbad Magazine or F-Stop Magazine. He has been selected and featured at Fotorafia Festival internazionale di Roma 2013 and Encontros da Imagem 2014.
